Part of: Learn to cycle in 5 steps · Step 4
At this stage you can start, pedal and stop. Step 4 of “Learn to cycle in 5 steps” is about control: steering smoothly, holding a line and checking behind you. These are the skills that make riding on a real road possible.
Riding in a straight line
Pick a point far ahead, such as a tree or a wall, and look at it. Cycling UK’s advice is to look ahead, not down, and keep your back as straight as possible. Wobbles usually appear when you stare at the front wheel. Keep the handlebar straight and do not lean your weight on it.
Turning
- Slow down before the turn, not during it.
- Look through the turn towards where you want to go.
- Keep pedalling gently, or glide with your pedals level.
- Turn the handlebar smoothly and lean the bicycle a little into the curve.
- Straighten up and speed up again after the turn.
Start with wide, gentle curves. When these feel easy, make them tighter. Avoid sharp turns at speed, and never brake hard in the middle of a turn.
Looking behind you
Looking back is the skill that most beginners avoid, and the one that matters most on a road. It lets you check for vehicles before you move out or turn.
- Slow down a little and keep a light grip.
- Turn your head and shoulder, not your whole body.
- Glance for one second and look forward again.
- Practise first in an empty place, looking over your right shoulder, then your left.
One-handed riding
Once you are confident, practise riding with one hand briefly off the handlebar, keeping the other covering the brake. You will need this for hand signals in Step 5. Do it only in a safe, empty place.
Drills to practise
- Slalom: ride slowly around a line of markers, such as water bottles or stones, set about 2 to 3 metres apart.
- The straight line: ride between two lines on the ground, about a metre apart, without touching them.
- Look-back challenge: while riding slowly, glance behind and shout how many fingers a friend is holding up.
- Stop on a spot: pick a mark and try to stop with your front wheel on it.
Next step
When you can ride a straight line, turn smoothly and look behind safely, you are ready for Step 5: hand signals and road rules.
